TrendyCurvy Travels: Coachella 2018

April 18, 2018

So if you’ve been following along on social media, you know that I have just returned from weekend 1 of Coachella 2018. I am still recovering (both mentally and physically) from such a whirlwind of a weekend but I had to tell you guys all about it. This was my second time attending Coachella so I wasn’t a complete newbie but I would say that this year’s experience was much different than last. The first difference was that I went VIP versus general admission (moving on up!) which had its pros and cons. Also, I did some things outside of the festival that added to my overall experience. So let’s get into it!

P.S. – how beautiful is Palm Springs?!

Day 1

As always let’s start out with the outfit. I wore this cute dress from City Chic that I thought was subtle but totally fit the festival vibe. The exact dress has since sold out but they have an identical style with different embroidery found here. I love the easy, breezy, no spanx-nezzy (not a word but you get the point) nature of the dress. It was comfortable and cute, just like I like it!

I was fortunate enough to attend Coachella with HP. They host an HP lounge on the Coachella grounds and this year they completely outdid themselves. Aside from the space being air conditioned which was much appreciated, it is a cool, technological marvel in the desert. There were so many activities from designing you own water bottle to creating light art that keep you entertained. Fit with a DJ and an amazing atmosphere, the HP lounge was the place to be in between shows!

The performances were great as always. I saw Vince Staples, Sza and The Weekend (from afar…My IG fam knows what I’m talking about). The one thing that I appreciate about Coachella is that everything starts on time! Give or take a few minutes, most performers go on right when they are supposed to as to not disrupt the schedule.

Hey, hey! So I am just getting back to Los Angeles and I could not WAIT to do this recap of my recent trip. I have been going to New York every year for 3 years now but never during fashion week. Luckily, the CurvyCon for the first time moved to September so that it occurred at the same time as NYFW.  That enabled me to kill two birds with one stone. So let’s just get right into my fun-filled 5 days in New York City!

Where I stayed

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I always give you guys the low down on the places that I stay while out of town. I love a cute and chic hotel that gives me decor envy and the Hotel 48LEX did just that. A quaint boutique hotel located in Midtown Manhattan (about a mile from Times Square) was the perfect place to stay while in New York. The rooms were spacious (which is saying a lot for New York) and the customer service was impeccable. Turn down service and complimentary wine and fruit were just some of the things the hotel provided. I would definitely recommend and will be going back.

Day 1

I hit the ground running! I mean, 3 outfit changes in one day kind of busy. Side note: my luggage was 51 pounds going to New York so you know I stuffed that thing to the brim! One of my first stops was to a brunch sponsored my Target put on by the CurvyCon. The brunch was filled with bloggers and those that had platinum tickets. I opted for none other than a Target blouse from the Who What Wear collection and black pencil skirt.

Day 2

Saturday was another busy day! Not only did I go to the CurvyCon but I also jetted off to the Christian Siriano runway show! It was my very first NYFW show and it could not have been more amazing. The show was filled with body diversity which made me feel so good as a plus size woman and the way the fashion industry is headed. I wore this amazing origami, hot pink skirt all day and I got SO many compliments on it. I felt like I was really representing for us curvy girls and proving that we are just a fashionable.

TrendyCurvy Travels: New Orleans

July 5, 2017

Outfit details – Duster: RUE107 | Crop Top: Forever 21 (similar) | Skirt: ASOS (wearing size 14)

Hi my loves! I’ve just returned from my trip to New Orleans and I have so much to share with you about it. It was my very first time in New Orleans and I was fortunate enough to be working with Ford Motor Company as they are an official sponsor of the Essence Music Festival. This 4th of July weekend was filled with empowering panels, energetic crowds and of course delicious food. So let’s get into it!

Where I stayed

Let’s start off with my hotel. I stayed at the Royal Sonesta that is located in the heart of the French Quarter right on Bourbon street. You are literally in the midst of all the action and let me tell you it can get a little crazy. However, the Royal Sonesta is a gem that offers a peaceful retreat from the happenings on Bourbon. The hotel has that classic New Orleans decor with huge crystal chandeliers as you walk through the lobby and wrap around balconies that is the trademark of the French Quarter. The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated.

Day 1

As soon as I landed in New Orleans, I hit the ground running. Ford Motor Company wanted to do something special for all those attending Essence Festival that were Ford Owners. So they decided to have a VIP reception on the second floor of the Convention Center. The special guest was comedian and host of The Real, Loni Love, and I was helping to host as guests arrived. Ford Motor Company has had the highest level of loyalty among African Americans so they really wanted to celebrate that and offer a token of appreciation.

I spent the rest of the day hanging out at the Ford booth downstairs at the Convention Center. Their booth had a “Block Party” theme with a DJ, musical performances, interviews with celebrities and more!

After I finished up at the Convention Center, I hit the picturesque New Orleans streets. I absolutely love the architecture and the whole vibe of the city. There is so much history with buildings that date back hundreds of years. This Simply Be Kaftan blended in with the colorful buildings and vibrant people.

Day 2

My second day in New Orleans, I had the pleasure of moderating a panel in the Ford Lounge called “Financial Winning”. Tiffany Aliche, also known as The Budgetnista, broke down everything you need to know about finances from budgeting to saving and most of all credit! As someone who chose a somewhat unconventional career path, I gained a wealth of knowledge from the talk and could really offer a unique perspective that many young entrepreneurs are faced with. It’s all about making your money “Go Further”!

Day 3

I had some downtime so I tried to take in as much of the sights and sounds of New Orleans as I could. There is live music everywhere so I just walked all around the city in awe of this beautiful place. This red dress was perfect for the heat and humidity (which was no joke by the way!). It allowed for a cute yet ultra comfortable look.

Before I headed home, I had one mission: to eat some beignets! So I went to none other than the famous Cafe Du Monde for this iconic New Orleans treat. The humidity had definitely gotten to me at this point so I opted for a white fedora to help keep me cool. Color was the theme of all of my looks and these Simply Be printed pants fit right in.

Thank you so much to Ford Motor Company for this amazing opportunity! Also thank you to the Royal Sonesta for the southern hospitality. New Orleans, you definitely made a lasting impression on me and I will be back!

Plus Size Swimwear Lookbook 2017

June 11, 2017

My swimwear lookbook is here! Recently, I took a little vacation to Miami as you can see here. I stayed at the beautiful Nobu Eden Roc hotel and had an amazing time. While there, I took advantage of the gorgeous scenery and shot my annual swimwear lookbook right on the hotel grounds. Now if you’ve been following me for a while now, you already know the drill. But to those that are new to my blog, every year I round up some of my favorite swimwear styles of the season. You can see my previous posts here and here. Historically, it has been so difficult to find trendy plus size swimwear but every year I do this lookbook there seems to be more and more options. Here are just some of the cute styles that caught my eye and that I styled with my own little flair. Enjoy!

I featured La Blanca for the first time on my lookbook last year and I had to feature them again. This time, I went with their one pieces that are unlike any that I have seen out there. Their attention to detail with the lace up front and gold hardware makes for one fabulous poolside look.

What can I say? SwimsuitsForAll will always be a staple in my swimwear lookbook. Not only do they have such a wide variety of swimwear in a myriad of sizes but they have so many great collaborations with people like Ashley Graham, Gabi Fresh and more. I was particularly drawn to Gabi’s swimwear this year so I had to feature a couple of suits from her line.

Kenneth Cole is making its debut to my annual lookbook. To be honest, I had no idea Kenneth Cole even made plus size swimwear. When I saw this mesh embroidered suit though, I immediately knew that it was a winner. This year I was particularly drawn to pieces that are unlike anything I’ve seen before and this was definitely it. The mesh panels with the beautiful garden design is super chic and a really clever way of being sexy without showing too much.

Last but certainly not least, there’s Miraclesuit. These suits are one of the most supportive and well-designed suits on the market. They hug you in all the right places and slim you down in the all the right places. I’m always amazed at how tiny my waist looks in their swimwear. Known for their one pieces, I went with some fun prints that really brought the suits to life!

I know that it is not always easy to feel confident in swimwear and trust me I have my days. Especially when it comes time to shoot this lookbook, I get especially anxious. Plus size women already get attention, whether positive or not, when wearing swimwear so you can imagine that it only amplifies when there’s a photographer and multiple wardrobe changes involved. However, each time I have done this shoot I have been met with people that give me amazing compliments and remind me of why I continue to showcase this lookbook. The more you face your fears and decide to live your life instead of hiding in the background, the more you realize that your insecurities are insignificant. It’s time to grow into confidence and enjoy all that life has to offer!

TrendyCurvy Travels: Coachella

April 25, 2017

If you’ve been following me on social media, you know that I just recently went to my very first Coachella! I am still recovering from the exhausting yet fun-filled weekend but I wanted to write a quick post about my entire experience. If you are ever thinking about going to Coachella or really any festival for that matter, you should read this post!

First, let’s discuss how I got there. Lincoln Motor Company graciously lent me a vehicle so that I could ride to the desert in style. I received a 2017 Lincoln MKZ and let me tell you, this car is the epitome of sleek! With a technology driven intuitive system, luxurious interior with plush seating and a beautifully designed exterior, the only word that comes to mind is impressive. If there was any way to take a trip to my first Coachella, this was it! It definitely set the tone for the weekend.

So now let’s discuss the festival. In a nutshell, I had an absolute blast. I got to see so many acts from Kendrick Lamar to DJ Khaled to Kehlani and more. The best thing about the festival is that there are mainstream artists as well as underground so you get the best of both worlds. I literally almost lost my voice from singing along to some of my favorites songs (yea I’m that person at concerts lol). The entire experience was just one big party.

Now, let’s discuss the real. These are not necessarily the “cons” but just the facts that you should know about before going to a festival such as this. Coachella brings in about 100,000 people per weekend. Yes, you heard that right. You don’t realize the sheer mass of what that many people looks like until you are in it. Needless to say, it can be overwhelming.

So here are the things to keep in mind:

  1. Personal space does not exist. It’s impossible to with that many people. All of the shows are packed even for the smaller artists. You will have people all around you pushing to get through or dancing to the music so be prepared to become very close acquaintances with your neighbors.

2. Water is essential! I know this seems self explanatory but you don’t realize just how dehydrated you can become being out in 90+ degree weather for 3 whole days. I don’t think that I’ve ever drunk so much water in such a short amount of time. Oh and bring cash! There were water stations to fill your water bottles for free however they were always packed. I just opted to pay $2 for the bottled water and save myself the wait.

3. Wear comfortable shoes…but know that your feet will still hurt by the end of the day. When I was on my way back to the hotel Saturday night, I realized that I had been standing for nearly 8 hours straight. There were so many shows that I wanted to see that I was literally going from stage to stage, only sparing time to eat and drink water in between. Compound that with endless walking and you will be sore by the end of the day.

4. Remember to go with the flow. This is probably my biggest piece of advice. Know what you signed up for. Normal things that would bother you, you just have to let go. Rude people, drunk obnoxious people, extreme heat, port-o-potties, etc. all just come with the territory. If you have an easy going attitude, you will have a much better experience.

Until next time Coachella!

TrendyCurvy Travels: Lake Tahoe

November 11, 2016

Outfit details: Scarf | Jeans | Boots

A couple of weekends ago, I went on a little getaway to the beautiful Lake Tahoe. For those of you that unfamiliar with Lake Tahoe, it is the largest freshwater lake in the Sierra Nevada and the largest alpine lake in North America. In other words, it’s huge! It straddles the border of California and Nevada so much so that even in one day I went from state to state several times. I was in search of a much needed break from the hustle and bustle of Los Angeles city life and to be in the presence of serene nature. Many of you have asked about the details of my trip so here’s the low down.

Where I stayed

I stayed at the picturesque Northstar Lodge by Welk Resort in Truckee which is the neighboring city to Lake Tahoe. I did a room tour on Instagram and Snapchat so that you can all see the massive layout of the rooms at this lodge. I went with friends so we opted for the 3 bedroom lodge that was fit with 2 fireplaces and 3 bathrooms. It was immaculate!

What I did

Our resort was located at the north end of the lake. Since I was really in search of relaxation and nature, we decided to drive about 75% of the way to the south end, stopping at landmarks along the way. The lake is so big that driving from where we were at in the north to the southernmost point that we stopped at before turning around (which isn’t even the most southern point) takes about an hour. So there was plenty to see along the way as you drive along the lake’s coast.

Our first stop was called Crystal Bay Lookout. It had the most breathtaking views that I think I have probably ever seen. It is a bit of a hike to get to the top (about a mile or so) and trust me I thought about stopping along the way but it was so worth it!

After coming back down the hill, we stopped at King’s Beach where you can see just how crystal clear the water actually is. Then after stopping in town and grabbing a bite to eat, we found this waterfall of the side of the road on our way to Emerald Bay Lookout. It was so beautiful! It’s something about being in the presence of nature that just bring me peace.

So that was my trip! Pretty uneventful and quick but a great weekend escape.
