Support Black Businesses

February 28, 2019

Outfit details – Jacket: Style & Co. (similar) | Top: Etsy | Skirt: Target | Shoes: Forever 21

On this last day of Black History Month, I felt the need to create this post. I would be remiss if I did not highlight some of the black-owned businesses that I have come to know and love.  Although TrendyCurvy is about fashion, I think that it is also important to bring attention to things that I am passionate about. One of those things is the advancement of people of color so that we are better represented financially and economically. So, I have compiled a small list of some of the brands that I am a frequent customer of to share with you. This is in the hopes that you may discover a new product that you love like I do. It is also to challenge you to think more consciously about where you spend your money and to support more minority-owned companies. So, without further adieu, let’s get into it!

Coloured Raine

I am frequently asked about what brand of lipstick that I’m wearing and nine times out of ten, I have on Coloured Raine. I first got introduced to this brand from a beauty blogger and have been hooked ever since. Every color that I tried suited me so well and when I discovered that the company was founded by a black woman, I knew exactly why. Perfectly pigmented and so complimentary to my skin tone, I have purchased their products again and again. My absolute favorite shades that I have purchased countless times are Cherry Blossom (thee perfect red), Oh La La (a vibrant raspberry pink) and Berri Raine (purple kisses anyone?). As you can see from two of these being sold out, they are definitely the favorites. Don’t fret though, just join the waiting list and you will be notified once they become available again.

I’m also hooked on their eye shadows as well including this gorgeous Queen of Hearts palette (even more stunning in person).

The Lip Bar

I discovered this brand from another influencer, Kela Walker. If you don’t follow her on Instagram, you should! She is constantly putting her following up on game when it comes to beauty and skincare products. She did an unboxing on her Instagram stories of this immaculate shade of liquid matte lipstick that I had to have! Turns out, the lipstick was from not only from a black-owned brand, but it retails for only $13. SIGN ME UP! I immediately went on to their website and cleaned up buying several shades.

M. Roze

As I get older, skincare has become the utmost priority when it comes to my daily routine. In researching products for my skin, I discovered that women of color tend to face the same struggles. This is partly due to our complexion and genetics. Because of that, we need specific products to address our particular needs. Things like hyper pigmentation, melasma and dark spots are all areas of concern.

In comes M. Roze. I was contacted by someone from the company who graciously offered to send me products to try. Their products being vegan, gluten-free, paraben-free, and are specifically formulated for black women. I began incorporating them into my regimen and over time, have seen a difference in the look and feel of my skin. Plus, the packaging is so perfectly chic and simple.

Rue 107

Wearing Rue 107 while in New Orleans

I could not do a round up of black businesses and not touch on this fashion brand. If you have not heard of Rue 107, you should definitely get familiar with them. They have unique, super stylish pieces that are sure to be head turners. With sizes ranging from a small all the way to a 3x, they really have something for just about everyone. I love their eye-catching colors and prints, as well as their styles that I don’t see anywhere else. Founded by Marie Jean-Baptiste, Rue 107 based out of New York is definitely one of my favorites.

Smash Shoes

Now, I am a little biased about this one because the owner of Smash Shoes, Ashlie Davis, is a friend of mine. However, that’s even more reason to highlight her brand in my opinion. Ashlie has tapped into a hole in the market and that is fashionable shoes for sizes 11 and up. Being of a larger shoe size herself, she knows personally the struggle that it is to fine on-trend footwear. So, she took it into her own hands and Smash Shoes was birthed. She has everything from thigh high boots, to booties, to sandals and more.

Brown Estate

This past year, I visited Napa for the first time. One of the first things on my to-do list was to visit Brown Estate. Travel Noire is a website that I follow that is dedicated to offering travel inspiration and tips from the perspective of the African diaspora. They published an article that highlighted black-owned wineries of which Brown Estate was listed. They have a beautiful tasting room right in the center of downtown Napa.

Thanks so much for taking the time to read this post and I hope that you found it helpful! Happy Black History Month!

Skincare Boost

February 20, 2018

This post is sponsored by Neutrogena. All opinions are my own

I’m sure that I don’t have to tell you how important skincare is. I think that everyone has the same goal and that is to achieve the best skin possible. I am a creature of habit and have some mainstay products that I will always use. They work for my everyday needs and they have stood the test of time. One of those products is the tried and true Neutrogena Makeup Remover Cleansing Towelettes. I am a stickler on removing makeup every single night before going to bed. My particular skin type cannot handle oils and products on my face overnight so these towelettes are my best friend. I have tried many alternatives and none measure up to this one. Removing even the heaviest and most stubborn makeup products, it makes this task easy with only a few swipes.

While I have my go-to products, I also like to dabble in the latest products to help boost my core routine. So as I was picking up my cleansing towelettes at my nearest Rite Aid, I couldn’t help but notice some of the newer products that Neutrogena has added. There were a couple in particular that caught my eye. The first is the new Deep Clean Purifying Clay Cleanser and Mask. I have tried clay masks in the past and wanted to make them a staple in my skincare regimen. I love how this particular one can be used as a daily cleanser or a mask depending on my skin’s needs.

The second product that I purchased was Neutrogena’s Hydro Boost Water Gel which is new for me but not new to the Neutrogena family. I have found that my skin needs constant moisture. My pores tend to absorb product pretty quickly so I’m always trying to find ways to replenish that. This water gel is to be applied after cleansing and will keep skin hydrated for up to 48 hours. Sign me up!

With these three products, I was excited to try them so off I went!

Here are my takeaways. I used the Deep Clean Purifying Clay as a mask and my skin felt so refreshed. You know the feeling when your skin feels very clean but not stripped? Yea that’s how mine felt. My skin is so prone to breakouts so I really love that this clay mask got deeper than my normal cleansers.

Then it was time for moisture. I used the Hydro Boost Water Gel after the mask before going to bed and let me tell you, it works so well as a night cream! It’s lightweight but still provides ample hydration. I could tell a difference in my skin the next morning and even throughout the day. I love when new products work out!

Thankfully Rite Aid is a one stop shop to get all of my skincare needs. AND just as a tip, Neutrogena Skin care will be Buy 1, Get 1 50% off this week and next so you don’t want to miss out! AND (this is the last “and”) I’m hosting a giveaway for a $50 Rite Aid gift card on my Instagram. Be sure to like the picture and comment to enter.

Hair Update: Living Proof

February 21, 2017

Hey guys! So if you will remember, about 2 weeks ago I started a hair trial using Living Proof products. To refresh your memory, you can check to post out here. I was looking for a solution that would keep my hair shiny and vibrant so that I could stay camera ready for all of my blog pictures. I used the complete system of the Restore line including their all new Restore Perfecting Spray. The Perfecting Spray is to be used after you’ve washed & conditioned your hair (while still wet) and is the final touch to strengthen, smooth and provide body to your tresses. Just spray on from root to tip and comb through with no tangles!

So I gave it a try and tested these products out for two weeks and I must say that I love it! This is me after I’ve already used the products a few times so that’s why I have a smile on my face. 🙂

The first thing that I noticed was the smell. It smells heavenly! I probably overdid it on my first use because I didn’t want the smell to go away (haha).

I use a lot of heat products when I’m styling my hair. Most of the time I do not have the luxury of letting it air dry because I am always in a hurry so I have to blow dry it. Then I follow that up with a hot comb (women of color definitely know this step) to get my roots straight and smooth. Then I style it with either a straightener or a curling iron depending on which way I choose to do my hair. In summary, that’s a lot of heat and heat can damage your ends and leave them feeling dry (not cute).

I can honestly say that I saw a difference very early on. When blow drying my hair, it felt so soft already and by the time that I got to curling it, I knew for sure that this product was working. The Restore Perfecting Spray uses “a blend of a cationic detangler and a slip-enhancing polymer” that when combined, provide easier detangling. The formula also includes UV and thermal protection and is sulfate-free, silicone free, oil-free and safe for color and chemically treated hair. I’d say that covers it all!

Camera ready? Approved!

I would highly encourage anyone to give these products a try. You can get the Restore Perfecting Spray here and the full line of Restore products here. It will be in my regular hair care routine and I’m excited to have found new products that work. Thank you Living Proof!
